Capturing Life Around You: Write

PART 3 of Capturing Life Around You (Read Part 1 here, Read part 2 here)

If you want to write about your life, you know that at some point pen will have to hit paper. What you may not know is how important it is to get the process started.

At some point, you must begin to write

Many amateur writers are intimidated by beginning. They want to wait for inspiration to hit. Successful writers rarely wait for such a miracle because they know the secret:

You don’t have to get it right; you just have to get it written.

Waiting for the perfect moment is an easy way to never finish. You need to get started. If that initial intimidation is too much, then start writing in some way that will be more comfortable. One of the best ways to do this is to keep a journal.

Journaling has a number of really useful benefits for a writer, especially one wanting to tell their own story. Journaling is great because it:

Establishes a routine – A writer in motion tends to remain in motion. When you get into the habit of writing, future writing becomes easier to do.

Is immediate – Why rack your brain trying to remember everything? Your journal is a reflection of your life as it happens. That kind of timely documentation is hard to pass up.

Paints a picture – Flipping through the pages of an oft-written journal shows you in broad strokes what is happening in your life. It reveals patterns and deeper concerns. It’s the character study for which fiction writers would give up an arm.

Every day that you put off writing is another day that your story goes unheard. It’s not enough to want to write it or to wish it was written. In the end, you need to start stringing the sentences together. Don’t wait another day.

Awesome. I love my journal. And it’s a great way to think things through. I like to write everywhere about different things. What I’m doing right now, what I’m thinking about, what I’m excited about. Nice website:~)
